It is rather tempting Miss Price agrees Meanwhile in London in late August 1666 a 35 year old nervous necromancer named Emelius Jones has just taken over the magical practice of his old mentor who told Emelius on his deathbed that there really was no magic involved in what they do; it’s just fooling people But then three strangely dressed but polite children show up on Emelius’s doorstep Bonfires and Broomsticks is another charming old fashioned magical adventure this one focused on time travel The plot didn’t go at all in the direction I expected For example when the children first meet Emelius and find out what date it is Carey brightly comments that the Fire of London will occur in a week’s time you have to admire her outstanding memory for historical dates One might be forgiven for thinking that a suspenseful and dangerous scene involving the children escaping death in the fire is in the cards but Norton has something uite different in mind though it does relate to the London fire Bonfires and Broomsticks has even less connection to the Disney film Bedknobs and Broomsticks than The Magic Bed Knob does aside from having a plot element involving a magical spell called “intrasubstantiary locomotion” called “substitutiary locomotion” in the film But the plot is entirely different and should be enjoyed on its own merits It’s definitely worth checking out if you liked the first book and the pair is available on Kindle for just 499 Both are early middle grade level reading This set in 1947 two years later Paul is now 8ys old and for some strange reason forgotten his adventures with Miss Price I found very silly that he forget something like that but idea was so author could remind the reader of book oneThis set in August 1666 just before the famous fire that started in London in Pudding Lane as any Doctor Who fan will tell you was the 5th Doctor and the The Terrlaptels who started it to destroy the plauge once again The Doctor saved the world looking like Peter DavisonHow Disney did these books was good movie but nothing to do with the books No 17th century no great fire of London but WWII Germans and animation football match Mary Norton has also a habit of talking down to children these books remide me of why I hated the Famous Five books same style I think been popular with children in 1940s 1960s but As child I never read them by 7 I moved on to Miss MarpleI think big reason for these book popularity is was nothing else no Harry Potter or Twilight in 1940s But today they very much immature for 4 5ys but depending on reading skills Very different ending from Disney The Illustrations are ghastly very childish look as if done by 5 old So apparently the Disney movie which admittedly is one of my favourites with its clever blend of live action and animation just compiled bits from the duology changed the settings and some details nixed the time travel plot line and created an entire island of cartoon animals so children weren't going to be traumatised by a group of cannibalistic islanders one of those rare instances where they didn't take the racist route Such a fun filled adventurous book Of course it makes sense to read Bedknob and Broomstick FIRST and then enjoy this book after Very very different from the Disney movie Bedknobs and Broomsticks but still fun just the same You can see where some of the ideas came from from this book and the first Although it may be different from the film it was a super fun and funny read There were actually some intense parts that had ME worried But very fun fun book I grew up reading 'The Borrowers' series It never dawned on me that the author wrote anything else I had now idea Disney's 'Bedknobs and Broomsticks' was written by her too This is a good elementary aged child book easily read and some exciting moments Story takes places two years after Bedknobs and Broomstick as the children return to the country for a stay with Miss Price hoping to experience adventure and excitement with her magic Sweet This one too
