Well I had this series stored on my Kindle for 2 years and I'm reading oldest ones first and this was the next one to come up I thought uh oh And sure enough it is the 'young teen girl gets on a sailing ship to America and they get attacked by pirates and she must dress like a boy yada yada yada'Well this is not at all a romance novel bodice ripper type pirate story This one is mesmerizing I finished this book and am halfway through the second one and have the third one yet to read This is a great series a great different topic from the usual suspense novels I read and I do recommend it I recommend the three book series Incredible When I picked up a copy of this book I thought it might turn out to be a 'Hollywood pirate' kind of story but I'm happy to say I was wrong After a little bit of the 'getting to know the character' stuff the whole thing turned very violent and very bloody very uickly But then pirates Then the story turns into one about how a fearful young girl transforms into a courageous woman and how the biases she learned from her social circle are dull and unfair The characters were also all so very real and believable and I have to admit that even with the age difference between Natalie the heroine and Black John the anti hero I wanted a romance to develop I can't wait to read the next in the series to see if it happens This is a story about a 16 year old girl who becomes stranded on an island after her ship has been set upon by pirates There she meets a man by the name of John Hayes and they work together to construct a vessel that will help them sail to Carolina while experiencing all types of adventure on the way This book needed a gooood editing There were scenes that I felt like should have been arranged into other sections of the book for instance I felt like the author giving us Natalie's entire life's story within the first 3 or 4 pages was too obvious and felt forced I would have loved to have her tell her story or we gradually learn bits and pieces of her life as the book progressed The same note for John's story about his wife at the islandThere was an entire scene that I thought was completely pointless and did absolutely nothing for the story There were grammar errors and areas that I felt like the author's writing style was just too elaborate and just well purple Not an entirely bad thing because it works really well with the dramaticactiony scenes Which this book has ALOT of But just talking about swimming in blue water and using all of these florid words in sentences that really should be 123 simple became too much I suffer from this Purple syndrome as well so I can understand the NEED to go off into these grand curling sentences but at the end of the day keep it simple where it countsAlso the consistent pointing out that Natalie came from a cushy life was grating on my nerves by the third chapter Its like dude we get it she's a lady got it I would have loved for that to be mellowed out some and we instead SAW the change instead of constantly being assaulted by it like the scene with the mirror on the islandThere were good memorable characters and the plot was meaty and the author did not hold back on the gore Which I also enjoyed This stuff actually happened during those days so I don't get why people should water down the truth just because it might be a little too harsh for some people's sensibilities I LOVED Natalie This is the first time in awhile where I've read a book and I wasn't face palming because of the complete ridiculous idiocy of the Strong Female Lead CharacterShe understood she had limitations and the big one was her background But she wasn't afraid to make something of her situation She didn't rely on John to make it happen or clung to the first cute boy she saw She wasn't whining or complaining She got frustrated but then who wouldn't? I thought she was a great great character and I ADORED the way she handled the situation with her dad I don't even think I could do something like that This was a good book It just had first novel kinks that can be smoothed over Good swift exciting plot good hearty characters Something that alot of authors have problems perfecting yet the author was able to construct the two uite well I was asked by the author to review this book and as I love pirate books and ones with strong female leads I said yes It took me forever to read this book partly because I was busy and partly because I couldn't decide if I liked it enough to finish it Once I really got into the story though I enjoyed reading it Natalie Satterfield is a 15 year old upper class English girl whose Irish mother has recently died and her paternal grandfather sends her to Charles Town modern day Charleston to live with her absent father On the way there the ship she is riding on is attacked by pirates and she escapes to a deserted island This is where it turns into a 1930s swashbuckling film It turns out the island is inhabitated by brown skinned savages who happen to be cannibals and she escapes them by being rescued by the island's other resident a pirate named Black John Hayes At first she dislikes him but after spending a year with him rebuilding a ship from shipwrecks she comes to trust him and calls him a friend They go to New Providence an island in the Bahamas and end up with two extra crewman who travel with them to Charles Town The reunion with her father doesn't go the way she planned and she ends up back on Natalie's Good Fortune the ship that she built with Captain Hayes They end up finding the pirates that not only raided and sank Natalie's ship but also killed John's wife Will they be able to claim vengeance for the pirate's misdeeds? To find out please read the exciting first book of the series I hope there are books to come Overall I think it was a great read It was very descriptive in the beginning which I personally like and I'm glad the author took the time to explain the nautical terms as not all seafaring books do that I will admit that the violence in the book made me uestion the appropriateness for young adults even with the kind of things that are out there now in YA literature I realize that with pirates you are going to get a certain amount of violence given their line of work That being so I would recommend this to ages 16 4 stars What I thought was a young adult novel of piracy was darker and hence realistic This well researched book of piracy and seafaring lore was pure entertainment and I hope the author publishes the seuel or seuels that are hinted at at the end of the book I look forward to the further adventures of Natalie and Black John Hayes
