along the way.Twelve years ago, Jubilee Rathman s family was brutally murdered by Detroit mobsters who had ensnared Jubilee s father into laundering money for them and who then slaughtered the family and set their home aflame, believing that Jubilee s father had ratted them out to the authorities and to two newspaper reporters Only Jubilee and her brother Joshua, who was badly burned in the attack, survived.Jubilee, who was once a model student and a star high school soccer player bound for the Ivy League, has spent the years since the attack plotting her revenge against those she blames for the deaths of her father, mother and sister and for the maiming of her brother She has reinvented herself and her brother, and she s built a large, fortress like complex on Purgatory Bay, protected by the latest technological devices and administered by a digital assistant named Frances, who is basically Alexa on steroids.Jubilee sets her plan into motion on a weekend when a prestigious girls hockey tournament is scheduled to be played in neighboring Bleak Harbor She has used the tournament as an opportunity to draw into her web Michaela Mikey Deming who, as a young reporter, wrote a story that Jubilee believes betrayed her father and put him in the sights of the mob killers Her other targets include a member of the crime family that attacked her family, another reporter, a former cop and others But Jubilee intends to hit most of these people indirectly in a way that will cause them to suffer the same pain that she has endured since that night twelve years ago.As I suggested above, this is a very intricately plotted novel, and Gruley reveals the vital information slowly, in bits and pieces, as the story progresses For much of the book, the reader is unsure exactly what is happening or why, and the tension builds to a great climax where everything finally falls into place Gruley has demonstrated his considerable talent in four previous books, the Starvation Lake series and last year s Bleak Harbor, but Purgatory Bay is his best yet and is sure to win him large numbers of new fans Purgatory Bay by Bryan Gruley is the second instalment in the well prepared plan for revenge against the people she believes are responsible for the loss of her family The book alternates between the time of the murders and the present when Jubilee s plan begins to be deployed with ruthlessness and anger against those she believes to be her enemies Who are these people How did they cause Jubilee s huge loss Are they responsible for her tragedy The plot of this mystery is original and the action never lets up Who doesn t love a good old fashioned revenge yarn Thank you to Thomas Mercer and NetGalley for the e ARC in exchange for an honest review I haven t read the first book of this series so I might have beenattached to the characters if I had The plot is pretty original and drones as murder weapon is still pretty fresh This wasn t a whodunit as much as a slow yet often predictable unraveling of why A couple of hiccups with a couple of twists make this a good read overall and I would readfrom the Author.Copy provided by the Publisher and downloaded the book as a document to my kindle which seemed to cause occasional technical issues but made it through Major issue for me was where the bad guy managed to get the funds to engineer and carry out the mission so either a fortune was left behind after the original incident that generated the desire for revenge hard to imagine the family business generating that kind of profit, even with the sideline business for the mob or some insurance paid off that was never mentioned. At any rate, thanx Net Galley for the interesting read Another page turner with surprises from Bryan Gruley So well written His descriptions of characters, their clothes, expressions and frame of mind, surroundings, the weather I m there. Disappointing tale from Gruley about a woman, Jubilee Rathman, who sets out to get revenge on anyone and everyone who she thinks is responsible for the murder of her parents and sister and the horrible injuries to her brother in a mob hit The biggest problem with the book is that Jubilee comes across so nasty, vicious, self righteous and generally unlikable that I didn t feel an ounce of sympathy towards her If Gruley wanted us to feel bad for her, which seemed to be the intent, then he failed Disappointing tale from Gruley about a woman, Jubilee Rathman, who sets out to get revenge on anyone and everyone who she thinks is responsible for the murder of her parents and sister and the horrible injuries to her brother in a mob hit The biggest problem with the book is that Jubilee comes across so nasty, vicious, self righteous and generally unlikable that I didn t feel an ounce of sympathy towards her If Gruley wanted us to feel bad for her, which seemed to be the intent, then he failed miserably Her attacks on the children of her adversaries, based on a whacked out comment her dad made years ago, just didn t ring true Even though the ending was rather solid, it still did not have the emotional impact it should have since I never cared about Jubilee s mission The other characters were annoying in their own way as well, albeit to a lesser extent A much better concept than actual execution, this story should have been so much better considering Gruley s previous successes My least favorite of his books 2.5 stars EntertainingThis book was entertaining and easy to read I enjoyed the bit of suspense It loosely referenced the first book but didn t go into too much detail which was good.
