Your own goddess? What could go wrong? ONE OF THE LONGEST AND MOST POPULAR MANGA TITLES BEGINS Here in this volume the incredible story of Oh My Goddess startsIf any of you read my previous review of the volume 555 GODDESS you may remember that I told you that that volume had mistakes and omissions from the original Japanese version In this volume all the mistakes are corrected and there aren't any omissionsNow you can enjoy the story as Kosuke Fujishima the author intended for us to experience itHere the writerartist Kosuke Fujishima begins his long run of a manga that it has been existing since almost 20 years in Japan Also it´s the longest without any interruption title of Dark Horse Comics and still a big sellerThe art on this volume is still not so good but the virtue of Fujishima is that if you are loyal and keep buying volumes you will notice that he gets better and better and the art of the manga will reach incredible levelsAlso even on his beginnings the art of Fujishima is amazingly detailed that not all manga artists are so careful with the details in the clothes and environment A PRICELESS STORY WITH SOMETHING TO EVERYBODY Oh My Goddess is a wonderful story with something to everybody you will find romance humor science fiction magic paranormal stuff mysteries action coming to age elements college situations even the details about motor vehicles will be stunning precise since Fujishima the author is a huge fan of anything with a motor on it specially motorcycles and race carsKeiichi Morisato is your average college student not the most popular but also not a chiclé loser He is a student on the Nekomi Institute of Technology and there he is also a member of the Motor ClubOne night while he is making a call to ask for pizza while taking care of a house of a friend he calls by mistake to the Goddess Relief Office and suddenly he is having in front of him Belldandy a beautiful woman who is a real goddess offering him a wish Without really thinking he just said the first thing that came to his mindhe wanted to have a goddess just like her for the rest of his lifeand a charming priceless story begins Now a rare item in any Oh My Goddess collection This particular Manga TPB of Oh My Goddess was the first one to publish by Dark Horse on America translated to the English language however Dark Horse edited it and they didn't print several pages from the original Japanese versionFans found out and they reclaimed to Dark HorseThe publishing house responded and they printed later 2 new TPBs Wrong Number and Leader of the Pack in that way the readers were able to get the whole initial stories with the full content intended on the original Japanese editionTechnically you don't need to have this very TPB 1 555 Goddess since this Manga TPB has errors of seuence and it didn't have the whole content of the storiesHOWEVER if you are a huge fan of Oh My Goddess on its original presentation on manga you may consider to have this TPB as a cool item for your own collection since it went out of printing due being an edition with the mentioned mistakes and nowadays you can only have it if you are able to find some of the original first printing editions Completely biased by nostalgia It's been over 20 years since I've read thisWorld The art is a work in progress now that I see it again when I first read this I was a teenager and thought it was fine now as I said it's very dated and wonky but still charming The world building is great it's little pieces that are created when the story needs it and there is no info dumping at all it's charming like the entire seriesStory I know the premise is ridiculous and dated and much like Edgar Rice Burroughs there is a blur whether we take it as it is or not at all and this is the case with this series Sure there are a lot sexist books in Manga and this is way way way on the tame side but it is true the premise is what it is That being said the core of the story when you look past the the issue is a charming and heartwarming slice of life and family drama which I love to bits It's the uiet moments and the small little charming moments that makes this series so very dear to my heart Seeing Belldandy at school Keichi dealing with school and in this arc Megumi and his relationship with his brother It's these little charming moments that make this series amazingCharacters Belldandy is very charming albeit one note she is a plot device at this moment in time in the book and Keiichi is the focus He's immediately likable and empathetic and the appeal of this story is anchored on him Some may find the development too slow but that's the point of the series it's not about the end result but the small little moments that make this sure a wonderful character and a character drama that it isA dated premise but get past that and you will find a gem of a slice of lifefamily drama that just warms the heartOnward to the next book This is the title that initiated the Magical Girlfriend subgenre of harems and ecchies and it’s also amongst the oldest harems yet still published manga series it’s been around since 1988STORY SECTION 510 Feels almost like a hentai Analysis General Scenario 12 Pacing 12 Side StoriesExtra Spices 22 Plausibility 12 Conclusion 02 The story is about a teenage dork dialing the wrong number and ends up living with a beautiful goddess ready to fulfill his wishes of which his is to stay with him forever wish fulfillment Soon afterwards her also godly sisters pop up harem creation and his life becomes complicating as he is constantly surrounded by supernatural hot chicks and had to keep using his talents to save the world from cosmic horrors action without messing his tiny personal life comedy The story is one big pile of comedy romance drama that also blends mythology with science fiction The core premise is always about Keichi and Belldandy being in love and staying true to each other even when the cosmic forces conspire against them The whole “Sudden Girlfriend Appearance” never made much sense and a “Magical Girlfriend” one makes even less The whole deal is uite unrealistic Beautiful goddesses living in your apartment and helping you solve your problems with epic level magic? That is something that happens only in anime as cheap means of escapism Plus only living with them but never go beyond peeking and hugging is something that all men should loathe worldwide But let’s not forget it was amongst the first to set the stage as such and it was everybody else that copied this now tired formula I hold nothing against its premise as it was uite original and interesting back then Also judging it as a fictional story it is far far better than most similar series as it leaves room for infinite possibilities Unlike most harems that are hardly trying to flesh out their characters or provide internal logic to all the madness in the story AMG is actually trying its best to make everything seem logical and excused The girls are all there for a reason react somewhat logical with the restrictions of the premise have powers that are somewhat excused through science and every event has technology and mythology to back it up Also the story never forgets to still be easy going and funny where nothing major or deadly ever happens; so all “fake looking” or “nerdy” situations in it are easily ignored Realism aside it is good and cheery without being great Some parts are definitely exciting or funny than others and most of the duration may feel as dead time but it is still overall uite enjoyable A big flaw for some is that there is no actual scenario development other than introducing secondary characters and ephemeral threats every now and then But if stand alone episodes and stale stories don’t bother you this is not a problem any Other than that there is no actual objective or even a conclusion no matter how many mangas come out It just goes on and on indefinitelyCHARACTER SECTION 610 Sultan’s favorite place Analysis Presence 22 Personality 22 Backdrop 22 Development 02 Catharsis 02 I admit that Belldandy is amongst my favorite anime girls Too gentle and good to be true but then again she is a goddess and that is enough of an excuse Her sisters Urd and Skuld are also very interesting Few series manage to present so many diverse and yet likable characters I can say it is the combination of great visuals ethereal music and unearthly nature that makes them feel far better than the average harem bimbo out there But Keichi is was and still is a typical male dork that is swarmed by beautiful girls without being anything special Oh sure he is gentle kind good hearted and the like; but let’s face it girls don’t really notice such things We can always justify it with the fact that Belldandy is a goddess that can see people for what they really are But since I am not a god I say he is a sissy for feeling embarrassed every time he has the chance to make some lovey dovey He and all other males like him in most harem anime are despicable They give the male gender a bad name he is the driest and worst character amongst the cast But if I am to give him a few redeeming ualities I can say he is actually using his brain from time to time to solve some problems and even finds the courage to fight for his harem Too bad he isn’t bold enough to do anything other than thatOther than that all characters have uirks backdrop stories and goals that go beyond their stereotypes as sex bombs edgy lolitas and shy male virgins The secondary characters are all very likable and give enough coloring to main ones None of them were bad or unneeded in the story I can’t say the same about Keichi and to think he is supposed to be the protagonist None develops or finds any sort of catharsis because of the short arced type of series which may become tiresome after awhile Meaning the characters are colored but are not developing at all Keichi and Belldandy come a bit closer in the end but it’s nothing muchART SECTION 910 Magical technology Analysis General Artwork 22 Character Figures 22 Backgrounds 22 Readability 12 Visual Effects 22 The art starts of very weak but slowly improves to the point it looks great if you compare it with other similar series All Slice Of Life series don’t use flashy visual effects they don’t fit there So the graphics here are catchier by default Most romances hardly have so heart warming atmosphere and adorable character figures Most Magical Girl series don’t have so well made or serious looking if you prefer visual effects Almost all comedies don’t have so detailed character figures They are usually simplistic and go chibi all the time Most HaremEcchi series turn their female characters into obnoxious panties revealing sluts The girls here retain an air of purity and gentleness The naughty scenes are few but worthwhile as the focus in the series is not waiting to see boobs every 10 seconds like it happens in most VALUE SECTION 810 A light that shines your heart Analysis Historical Value 33 Rereadability 23 Memorability 34 Ah My Goddess helped to mainstream Harem and Magical Girlfriend stereotypes and thus deserves a good mark just for that Rewatchability is high It is comical and heart warming enough to deserve a second watch But you will most likely skip some not so great part Although not original or uniue any it is still amongst the best of its genreENJOYMENT SECTION 510 Like a sunny day it is enjoyable but also rather passable Some problems ruined a portion of the enjoyment The relationship between Keichi and Beldandy never goes beyond hugging making the whole deal stale and without further development The story itself has no development other than introducing secondary characters every now and then There is a lot of character coloring as the series progress but very little character development You get to know about them but don’t see them change at all There are lots of uninteresting chapters where the goddesses andor demons rival each other just for laughs There is no conclusion The rest of it was uite decent and a worthy read VERDICT 710 A great piece of work in its kind that is bogged down by its stale and aimless storytelling Oh My Goddess is one of the many manga classics I'd never tried I wasn't sure it be my type of thing but it into a recent reading challenge I did so I finally gave the first couple of volumes a tryKeiichi is a college student with a height complex and a troubled social life When a misdial connects him to the Goddess Technical Help Line and Belldandy arrives to grant him a wish he thinking it's all a prank offhandedly wishes for her to be with him forever Thus begins his life with a live in exchange student and the cosmic powers that will conspire to keep them together and punish those who try to pry them apartI enjoyed this than I thought I would There's not a lot of depth to the stories or characters but there is humor and charm The situations are cliched at this point but of course this is a two decades old manga Since each tale is generally confined to a chapter it has a strong gag of the week feel which could be a plus or minus depending on what you're looking forThe art is very good for the style but admittedly said style is uite dated The production values from Dark Horse are excellent particularly in preserving all of the colored pages which is very rarely done in US editions for cost reasonsVolume 1 of OMG is a decent start and generally amusing but I'm not sure it grabbed me enough to continue with much Wasn't a fan of the art therefore I couldn't get into it Talk about complex life This book was funny and very well designed This happy couple get into trouble combined I enjoyed reading it A must read 25 stars One of the upsides of the COVID 19 pandemic is that it led to me using the local library network's online catalog instead of browsing the selection available at the closest library building to me This is because of a change in how books were being checked out at the time there is a new but similar process in place as of this writing I think You select a book and put a hold on it and then the librarian puts your selection into a bag for you to pick up This helps with social distancing This means that the catalog for the entire library network opens up to me I didn't know how to do this at the start of the year so I might not have found this particular book It is the first omnibus for the classic romantic comedy Ah My Goddess It is chapter 1 through chapter 23 Up until now I have only seen the OVA so I was excited to see its roots It was very interesting to see how the story began Belldandy's design for instance is a lot different than what it would be when the anime started Characters in universe mistake her as being a traveler from India Also since Belldandy herself is initially the only supernatural character to be regularly present for many chapters the story as a whole is a low fantasyurban fantasy than it would be in later arcs when goddesses and demons show up This includes what I think is a narrow restriction on the number of times Belldandy can use her powers in one day If she could use them freely then she would solve every problem effortlessly because no one else has any kind of power Certain events in the early chapters are a different kind of interesting in light of the infamous plot twist that takes place late in the series; it is clearly a retcon BUT one can see where the origins of such an idea can be seen Is it a coincidence or foreshadowing decades in the making? The chapters definitely get better over time The introduction of different sorts of antagonists allows for different types of conflict while providing opportunities for hilarity to ensue as this conflict happens to Keichi Sayoko Mishima tries to steal Keichi Toshiyuki Aoshima tries to steal Belldandy and Urd is actually trying to be helpful to Keichi and Belldandy but causes trouble because she is The Exchanger of Means and Ends In other words she has a good intention but gets carried anyway in how she fulfills that intention Occasionally there is a motor vehicle race and those are also fun So the comedy follows the duo's responses to these conflicts and Keichi is usually the butt of the jokes Indeed it is as if the Yggdrasil system is balancing the tremendous good fortune of having a girlfriend like Belldandy with lots of comedic misfortunes My favorite is when he takes a part time job as a monster for a Tokusatsu superhero show only to discover when the rest of the cast has left that he can't work the zipper on his costume so he decides to wander the street and beg a stranger for help That scenario had me in stitches for several minutes On another note regarding the story's romance aspect I thought it was odd that the earliest phase of Belldandy and Keichi's relationship is glossed over The first three chapters are their first full day together and then the next two chapters cover I think several months So by chapter 6 or so they are definitively a couple and acting like it I think I like it better that way Rare is it that I find a manga that uickly establishes its official couple as official so uickly Most go for the Will They Or Won't They route so a reader is lucky to see as much as an attempted confession by the end of the series This one shows an actual relationship such as the two of them going on dates working together on projects and Keichi looking for a meaningful way to mark their one year anniversary together So while I didn't see why they fell in love I get to see chapter after chapter of them actually being in love which few series are willing to do Trickster Eric Novels gives Ah My Goddess omnibus #1 an A You know this is one of my favorite manga series of all time and that's saying a lot I realized that I had fallen behind on reading them as they came out so I resolved to start over with a complete reread until I have officially read the whole series Since this is my first time reading it on Goodreads I'll be reviewing it freshlyTo be uite frank as much as I love the series the first volume has art that is frankly pretty terrible uality However I started a few volumes in and backtracked to the beginning to get the first scoop I'm always a little disheartened by how rough the faces are in the original first volume of the manga However that aside the story is still pretty decent and it does a good job of setting up the basics of the rest of the series And please if the art is at all off putting to you trust me when I say that it gets better fast Even by volume two the artist Kosuke Fujishima who I adore has made vast improvements to his art style When you get further into the series you're not going to even believe looking back how rough his art was in volume 1 because it's just so beautiful in later volumesI would recommend this to pretty much anyone who doesn't turn their nose up at manga but I do suggest that they read the above paragraph and give it a chance Seriously it's a beautiful story and the characters are so worth it
