really has no idea how to function in yeah I know, bad grammar How he adapts to fulfill his uncle s requests is great fun to witness International intrigue, romance, action, time travel, family dysfunction, violence and some surprise aspects that would require a spoiler alert to share My copy did have some typos and mistakes, you know how I get when they are too egregious Fortunately they didn t quite reach that threshold But enough to mention.Main characters were fairly well developed, but some ancillary characters not as well This makes some of the actions those characters take a bit jarring I admit though that this may be a bit on the picky side, because overall the book is very entertaining A good engaging adventure that appears to be the launch pad for a fun series Enjoy We all have that one weird relative in the family, right You know the one I m talking about dresses weird, talks weird Your family talks in hushed whispers about how they re just not right Meet Uncle Herbert He happens to be that guy And now he s gone and dragged his nephew, Andrew, into the fray The events of this novel fit right into the eccentricities of Uncle Herbert It s a wild ride from start to part, every character served a crucial role to the story I say for the most part, and I ll get to that in a minute While well written, there was a lot of uninterrupted dialogue Properly spaced, mind you, but it felt like one long speech when characters talked sometimes There was no action to break it up It was excellent exposition and the information was necessary It didn t need to be all at once, though In some parts, it did serve to jump the narrative ahead, especially given the time frame Some of the character interactions felt forced, as did the love story Remember when I said each character served a crucial role to the story Avril didn t She felt thrust into the narrative to serve as nothingthan the love interest Her character doesn t feel as rounded as the others I like how it ended, I didn t particularly care for how we got there The character development was okay Andrew s was the most notable, as expected of first person narratives I wish some of the supporting characters had a littleto them, though. The author takes great care in how the story unfolds Character placement and personality become very important, something they manage to reflect What I liked most was how the author managed to weave little seeds of doubt for the loyalties of the characters It kind of felt like I was playing Clue As the cast expands, readers analyze every detail to try and predict how the story will turn out Because of this, Uncle Herbert isn t as predictable as it first seems There s some minor editing needed It s not enough to tear the reader out of the story.Uncle Herbert was a book of unique tastes, much like the man himself I wasn t sure what to expect going into this novel, but I can say I wasn t disappointed Adjusting the way the reader s given information would help how the narrative progresses Uncle Herbert is a very worthwhile read Uncle Herbert Time is Running Out Sand Mountain Tales by Philip C Elrod, 310 pages, March 10th, 2017, Genre Young Adult Adventure and requires Andrew to do the unthinkable Andrew does as is needed, only to discover Uncle Herbert isbrilliant and sly than he ever imagined The story is told in first person narrative style through the perspective of Andrew Benson The characters are well developed with unique traits and quirks At the start of the story, Andrew is a simply, small town lad By the end, he s experienced adventures that take him around the globe and into harrowing situations Andrew also finds love The most interesting characters were Uncle Herbert and Dr Qureshi I found Dr Qureshi s bad jokes endearing and amusing The plot was fast paced through most of the book During the middle twenty percent of the book it slowed down but regained pace Uncle Herbert Time is Running Out is an interesting story with memorable characters Elrod weaves together elements of science fiction and action adventure into a fun coming of age tale I d recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys young adult action adventure novels with a twist Andrew Benson s eccentric Uncle Herbert is a genius who invents a time machine Whilst journeying into the future he makes a gargantuan error and returns to the present with a virus that, if released, will obliterate all life on Earth With no alternative, he seals himself into his laboratory deep underground and gives nephew Andrew and lawyer Cosmo the ominous task of procuring a first I wasn t convinced by the route this was taking However, with a few chapters under my belt, I knew I was going to like it I m not a big fan of comedy I like my fiction to be serious but this had just the right balance It was a good read without being too OTT for my tastes It was certainly an enjoyable and fresh approach to the time travel genre Thanks to author Philip C Elrod for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.https barnseybooks.blogspot.co.uk 2 Having read Mylean Universe Series by the talented Philip C Elrod before, I pre ordered Uncle Herbert right away, knowing presented with a chance to be Uncle Herbert s only heir, only the fortune comes with a price that Andrew isn t sure he s willing to pay I loved how the sci fi and thriller genres were masterfully interweaved together in this highly compelling story I came to care for the characters, not only the main ones, but also the secondary ones, and that s a sign of a really good author right there Humor was also introduced in all the right places, lightening up the mood of a story that could have been rather somber without it, and it made me laugh out loud several times.Another fantastic read from Mr Elrod Highly recommended
