It was the hottest season in a hot dry landLittle Anna is ill with fever so her parents bring her to rest in the garden room where she can look at the lemon trees and the mysterious ice house Her father tells her the cooler winds will find her there but they don't arrive and her fever persists In her dreams she visits the land of the Ice Palace where everything is frozen and polar bears are your best budsChildren's picture books with wonderful illustrations are items I just love and this is a winner The artwork by Angela Barrett is a soft palette switching between the cold land of dreams and the blazing land of lemons Oh those lemons It looks very much like Sicily but the story doesn't need explanations The ending and the very last illustration is wonderfulBook Season Winter frozen lakes Very pretty pictures if not as distinctive as Barrett's often are and pretty description of the fevered girl's dreams The story itself sort of fizzled at least for me view spoilerIf the father was able to take the girl to the ice house why did he wait so long? hide spoiler While beautifully illustrated The Ice Palace's story line fell flat There was a point where the sick child's fevered dreams turned to reality and all was well? Did the girl die? Was that why the story took such a strange twist? I don't know but as I mentioned the pictures were awesome Great story and illustrations
