Thoroughly enjoyable tale populated some really nasty bastards who entertained me from start to finish Also fun to read a book that, on the surface, seems to be a bunch of short stories but is a lotDefinitely recommended. Ashley Lister s Raven and Skull is wicked fun a paranormal page turner with multiple murder mysteries, a thrilling heist caper and a scintillating occult horror story all served up together in a pleasingly steamy Rashomon style narrative Mining modern office life for all its foibles and follies, Lister draws on the drudgery, the petty stresses born of endless routine and unrelenting boredom, for a fantasy that never fails to entertain There are the vicious rumors most of them true about the Ashley Lister s Raven and Skull is wicked fun a paranormal page turner with multiple murder mysteries, a thrilling heist caper and a scintillating occult horror story all served up together in a pleasingly steamy Rashomon style narrative Mining modern office life for all its foibles and follies, Lister draws on the drudgery, the petty stresses born of endless routine and unrelenting boredom, for a fantasy that never fails to entertain There are the vicious rumors most of them true about the co workers carrying on a tawdry affair, or the urban legend about the ghoul in the janitorial department down in the basement where no one in their right mind ever goes at night, the back biting rivalries, passive aggressive political gamesmanship, creepily omniscient bosses who seem to know what their workers are up to even before the workers do, the firm s mysterious system of transfers and promotions, andthan a few unexplained disappearances to fuel office gossip Written in an accessible, uncomplicated genre pop style, Raven and Skull will keep you up at night as you keep turning the pages, breathless to find out what happens next Recommended Review published on www.strandedintoronto.comTell us about a time you nearly died, Tony I met Ashley Lister at Eroticon 2014 in Bristol, UK He was giving a lecture on using the basics of Joseph Campbell s Hero s Journey in romance and erotic writing I was one of the faceless attendees that day and, as Mrs Stranded and I often joke, the only one in the room with no accent That Lister was hitting on the Campbell note, the same note that inspired one named Lucas to write Star Wars , was o Review published on www.strandedintoronto.comTell us about a time you nearly died, Tony I met Ashley Lister at Eroticon 2014 in Bristol, UK He was giving a lecture on using the basics of Joseph Campbell s Hero s Journey in romance and erotic writing I was one of the faceless attendees that day and, as Mrs Stranded and I often joke, the only one in the room with no accent That Lister was hitting on the Campbell note, the same note that inspired one named Lucas to write Star Wars , was one of the highlights of the conference for me Raven and Skull is the first chance I have finally had to read one of Lister s work.Having been part of the conference at Eroticon, finding Lister writing in the horror realms was surprising Honestly, I expected romance or erotica. What a pleasant surprise, though.Don t get me wrong This is not dark, heavy Clive Barker horror we are discussing This is light horror, though wonderfully crafted Just for reference, of the heavyweights, I d equate thisto something I d expect from Neil Gaiman. It s a bit of an anthology that is wild fun as employees gather at a pub and tell of their adventures within the hallowed halls of Raven and Skull From the Skull on the desk to the mysterious janitor, the stories are fresh and fun with just a slice of darkness that brings a grin to my face I m not confident I can ever look at stairs the same way again. It s the typical after work employee banter with additions of murder, Satanism, and mafia. We ve all experienced this, right No Oh, wellokay, I ve not either. And that s why this works so well.Lister gives us characters we all know well, but in situations that we just can t fathom and have to keep reading about to get the full impact.Impactyesagain, I am now afraid of stairs.Having bought the ebook version, I m deep enough in this that I want a printed copy Highly recommend this one for those enjoying a light dose of the darkness with a heavy dose of humor I quite enjoyed the premise of this story but there were issues with it I am not here to disparage indie writers, but I think a good editor would have picked up inconsistencies, and I wasn t comfortable with what came off as casual misogyny I know the characters were supposed to be unlikeable but the novel contained lots of derogatory references to women and female appearances which weren t balanced. I had to wait a while to receive the book presumably it was in demand when first published so have only recently had the opportunity to read it Now I ve finished it following some late night reading sessions Guess what It s good Proper good It didn t scare me perhaps that s just my nature But I wasn t looking for that I read books to be entertained and enjoy a good yarn This one is.Before reading it, I was sort of aware it was a collection of tales from a group of work colleagues I had to wait a while to receive the book presumably it was in demand when first published so have only recently had the opportunity to read it Now I ve finished it following some late night reading sessions Guess what It s good Proper good It didn t scare me perhaps that s just my nature But I wasn t looking for that I read books to be entertained and enjoy a good yarn This one is.Before reading it, I was sort of aware it was a collection of tales from a group of work colleagues I didn t expect the tales to be interwoven bringingdepth and cohesion to the stories Clever. The characters Realistic Often unpleasant, but you still want to find out their fates The author has a twisted sense of humour which is echoed in some of the descriptive passages.I thought the ending was slightly abrupt, but perhaps that is because I wanted to readI wasn t sure what to expect I ve never really been attracted towards horror books the last one I read was Carrie in the early 80s that wasn t bad and I think the author did quite well so I m now asking myself, Is Ashley s book typical of the genre I don t know I do know that if you haven t bought it and read it, you should I look forward to the next one Oh I so enjoyed reading this book It s like a throw back to old anthology horror movies like Tales of Terror 1962 and Dr Terror s House of Horros 1965 , where you have a number of characters all conected telling their own personal stories of horror In this case it is the staff of Raven Skull who have had a very bad week and have decided to go out for an end of the week drink It is the bar where they each tell their taleAnd I will not spoil it Ashley Lister has a writing style t Oh I so enjoyed reading this book It s like a throw back to old anthology horror movies like Tales of Terror 1962 and Dr Terror s House of Horros 1965 , where you have a number of characters all conected telling their own personal stories of horror In this case it is the staff of Raven Skull who have had a very bad week and have decided to go out for an end of the week drink It is the bar where they each tell their taleAnd I will not spoil it Ashley Lister has a writing style that captures the tension and quirkiness, yet is full of dark humour Some of his descriptions will make you smile which can, at times, give you a fulse sense of security.I have thoughly enjoyed reading it If you like your horror with a sense of intrigue, writen buy someone who obviously loved what they were doing, then pick up a copy of this, you ll be thoroughly entertained This book is THAT good it somehow made me feel like a teenager again It would have lent itself perfectly to the legendary Hammer House of Horror films I loved to watch, from behind the sofa, in my youth The twisted tales told by the employees at Raven and Skull are rich with the devilishly deviant humour of the author As I read it there were instances where I found myself struggling to supress a Dick Dastardly style snigger or do I mean Muttley at the turn of events It s a collection of This book is THAT good it somehow made me feel like a teenager again It would have lent itself perfectly to the legendary Hammer House of Horror films I loved to watch, from behind the sofa, in my youth The twisted tales told by the employees at Raven and Skull are rich with the devilishly deviant humour of the author As I read it there were instances where I found myself struggling to supress a Dick Dastardly style snigger or do I mean Muttley at the turn of events It s a collection of thoroughly entertaining stories with a cast of brilliantly drawn, universally unpalatable characters It is fiendishly funny, eerily erotic, monstrously macabre and I loved it More please I wrote this book, so obviously I m going to give it a five star review, but I had a lot of fun writing it and my beta readers have given the title a lot of praise If you do get a chance to read this one I d love to know what you think to the title.
