attraction develops between Lizzy and Cody which they both try to fight Lizzy, because she knows she will be moving on as soon as the wagon is repaired, and Cody, because he feels he has nothing to offer Lizzy. This was just an okay read for me While it had very likable characters and provided some lovely and heartfelt moments and a couple of sweet secondary romances, there were just too many other times that the story didn t hold my interest and my mind was wandering off Much of the story took place at Cody s cabin while waiting for the snowstorm to pass and it just seemed to drag on and on after a while I thought the story got better when they spent time in the town of Commencement, and probably would have been better overall iftime had been spent there instead But that happened far too late in the book As for Christmas, it only figured in about the last 50 or so pages Although this book wasn t for me, others may find it a sweet and heartwarming read Lizzy Spooner was traveling through New Mexico with her grandpa, Amos, her younger sister and brother when a snowstorm came up Their grandfather couldn t see very far and he ran their wagon off the path Amos sent Lizzy with one of the horses to find help She traveled until she couldn t go any further and the horse was being attacked by wolves Cody Martin shot the wolves and took Lizzy into his house for the night They set out the next morning to find her family Cody and Lizzy tracked back Lizzy Spooner was traveling through New Mexico with her grandpa, Amos, her younger sister and brother when a snowstorm came up Their attacked by wolves Cody Martin shot the wolves and took Lizzy into his house for the night They set out the next morning to find her family Cody and Lizzy tracked back to her family using markings she had left on the trees Cody told Amos that it would take a while to fix the wagon so he was taking them back to his house Another storm was blowing in It was nearing Christmas and Lizzy told Cody that his finding them was their Christmas Miracle Cody took the family back to his cabin home Lizzy cleaned and cooked while Sara Jean rested Sara had been married and two days after the ceremony, her husband went to fight in the Civil War and never returned She was pregnant James was somewhere near five years old Their father had died in the war and soldiers had burned their home Amos was taking the family to California to escape the memories The evening was interrupted by a group of five men on horseback The leader was there to steal horses and had mislead one of the men into thinking they were to purchase them That man was Ned, he was Cody s brother The men rode off but old Cody they would be back and he would pay for running them off Cody had faced them with a gun while Amos and Lizzy had come out with rifles of their own to back him up It was obvious that there was bad feelings between Cody and Ned Ned took an instant liking to Sara Jean and she felt the same way about him Cody talked him into staying a few days because there was another storm blowing in Ned helped Cody catch some wild mustangs Ned was surprised that Cody let him take half of the mustangs into town to sell them for money of his own He had been offered a job as stagecoach guard for a company based in the town closest to where Cody lived Cody was becoming increasingly attracted to Lizzy He recognized the strength and passion in her He had left home himself after the war to get away from people and his own memories He had survived the war but his wife and five year old son had not He didn t think he would ever feel love for a woman again until he met Lizzy Cody saw Lizzy helping Amos shaving a log to replace the broken axle and took her place after he saw her raw hands Cody rubbed some ointment into her hands and they kissed The wagon neededwork done and Amos took Sara Jean into town so she could what the town was like Lizzy and James remained at the house with Cody Cody found that being alone with Lizzy it was impossible to keep his hands off of her He decided it was best to leave them alone He made the decision to get away for a few days until her family returned He hadn t been gone long when he noticed some tracks He recognized the hoof prints as being the same as the leader of the group who had come to his house to steal his horses The tracks were leading back to his cabin He was frightened now because Lizzy and James were there alone He didn t want to lose them like he had lost his family He headed back to his cabin when he noticed smoke Lizzy had started a stew and she and James went to the barn to feed the horses They were in the barn when they heard horses Lizzy recognized the riders and locked herself inside the barn She looked for another way out and found none Only Cody s pregnant mare was in the barn with them The men tried to get inside and when they couldn t, they set the barn on fire Lizzy sent James through the back wall on the mare and she went out to face the men with the rifle Cody had told her to keep with her at all times The men were trying to talk her out of her rifle when one of them came around the corner holding James He had blood on him that she didn t know wasn t his She wouldn t allow the men to hurt James and she shot him She kept shooting until her rifle was empty and she thought she kept hearing shots even after she had emptied her gun Cody had arrived and between the two of them, four of the guys had been killed The leader, Walt, had gotten away Lizzy was upset and Cody gave her some whiskey and put her to bed She was somewhat out of her mind over what had happened and over killing someone Her family arrived back soon and learned what had happened Sara Jean told Cody that Ned had sold five of the horses and taken the job protecting a stage that was carrying gold Sara Jean was worried and Cody was too although he wouldn t admit it to anyone Sara Jean told Lizzy about the boarding house and how their grandfather had seemed taken with the lady who ran the boarding house The axle in the wagon had been replaced and the family was preparing to be on their way Snow storms were preventing them from going anywhere Sara Jean went into labor and Lizzy helped deliver her baby girl Sara Jean named the baby after their mother and Lizzy, Josephine Elizabeth and called her Jobeth James enjoyed having a baby to play with James spent a lot of time following Cody around and Cody enjoyed his company James spent most of his time with Cody s dog, Beau Cody decided it was time to start working with the mustangs to break them into saddle riding James watched him and told Cody that he wanted to work with wild mustangs when he grew up Cody was flattered The doctor from town come to check on Sara Jean and Anne, from the boarding house, came to visit They stayed for a few days It was obvious that Anne was interested in Amos She had brought chickens and eggs with her along with buttermilk Anne cooked for the family and talked constantly during her time there They left and Sara Jean and the baby went back to town with them Amos told Sara Jean that they would be along to pick them up in a couple of days Cody s mare went into labor and Lizzy, James and Amos all went to the barn to watch the foaling Cody let James name the colt and he chose Stormy because of the snow storming outside while they were warm and cozy in the barn James fell asleep and Amos took him into the cabin Lizzy remained in the barn with Cody and they made love that night Cody had tried to get Lizzy to go back to the cabin with her family but she had refused and Cody couldn t resist her He didn t even try very hard He knew he was in love with her and being around her had healed his heart after the loss of his wife and child They stayed another night and were getting ready to leave when a rider came to the cabin and told them that Ned was missing The stagecoach he had been riding on had returned empty Cody rode into town with them They went to the boarding house and Cody didn t stay He left to search for Ned It wasn t too long before Cody found a cabin with smoke coming from it He was far enough away to spot a group of men sneaking around the cabin It was obvious they were going to attack Cody watched them as he snuck into the cabin and found Ned Ned was there with the stagecoach driver that Ned told him seemed to be having trouble with his heart With Cody s help, the men entered the cabin and without a shot fired, the men were captured Cody and Ned took them back to town The brothers themselves argued about their differences and them both fighting on opposite sides of the Civil War The brothers returned to town hero s for having caught the gang trying to rob them The stage company s owner stopped by to give Ned a bonus He told the brothers that the gang would most likely have gone on for years causing trouble if they hadn t been brought in so quickly Cody was heading back home when a group of drunk men decided to call him out There were four men who were attempting to shoot Cody when his brother stepped out and told the men that he stood beside the Yankee who was his brother even though he himself was a Rebel Amos stepped up with his gun and told the men that he also stood by Cody and that the war was over The men were no longer Yankees and Rebels They were all just hard working men Ned threw down his gun and told the men that they would have to shoot an unarmed man and they walked away Ned then talked with the family and told them all that he had gone to school after Cody had left to fight He was an ordained minister and would be happy to remain in town to serve the people there They were happy to have him.It was then mentioned that the next day was Christmas Eve and the town was holding a dance in the back room of North s mercantile James asked Cody of he would be there and Cody told James that he had to return home to take care of his horses They all woke up Christmas Eve morning and spent the day preparing for the event They all took baths in tubs that was a luxury that hadn t happened in a long time Sara Jean had taken one of their mothers old dresses and altered it to fit Lizzy She told Lizzy that it was her way of giving something back for all that Lizzy had done for the family The dress she made for Lizzy was green to match her eyes and it looked beautiful on her She had altered a blue dress for herself to match her own eyes James wore an outfit given to her by Anne that one of her children had worn Anne wore a black and silver gown that had a matching jacket Amos got the wagon out and Ned rode with them to the dance Cody had arrived back at his cabin and was missing the company He felt the house and barn were too empty and too quiet Another blizzard had begun He felt the choice to go back into town for the dance was made for him Lizzy stayed back from the crowd and spent most of the night missing Cody and holding Jobeth It was later that evening that James asked Lizzy to dance with him He had prayed before the dance that God would find a way for them to stay in Commencement They were talking about Cody when James spotted him Cody came and asked Lizzy for a dance It was soon the last dance of the evening and James was playing hide and seek in the mercantile Cody snuck out into the mercantile and kissed Lizzy He told Lizzy that he was in love with her and she told him that she was in love with him too They didn t know that James overheard their conversation They went back to Anne s boardinghouse and Anne told Cody that he had missed most of the dance and she knew hadn t eaten They spread out the leftovers from all the food they had taken to the dance and had another dinner It was now after midnight Christmas had arrived Ned carried Jobeth s cradle upstairs and he and Sara Jean put her to bed Ned then asked Sara Jean if she would consent to marry him and stay with him in Commencement Sara Jean agreed and Ned went downstairs to take to Amos Just before they started to eat, Amos told the others that Ned and Sara Jean would be married Cody prepared to leave and gave Amos a sleigh for their travels over the snow covered land He had made the sleigh where the runners could be removed and replaced with wheels once they reached areas where there was no longer snow Amos had also built a sleigh that he gave to Cody His wasn t finished as much He had really hoped to finish it in time and stay longer in town so that he could finish it He had hoped to manage to stay until spring The exchange of gifts took away that time from him Amos was a little disappointed Cody told the family good bye James decided that he needed to speak up and yelled for Cody to stop He told Cody that he had overheard the conversation between him and Lizzy James told Cody that he didn t want to leave He told Cody that he needed to ask Lizzy if she wanted to marry him so he could stay with him Cody turned to Lizzy and he asked if James was right and if she wanted to stay Lizzy told him that was the most unromantic proposal she had ever heard but that James had said it all She agreed to marry him Amos asked Anne if she would mind them staying on Ned was prepared to give the Christmas service that day and he was to be married at the end of it He now knew that there would be three weddings that Christmas day Christmas was indeed the time for miracles Uma gra a de hist ria, para deixar o cora o quentinho no final Ruth soube, mesmo que em um romance de poca, demonstrar as dores, dissabores e horrores das guerras, no caso
