A black guy going to dinner with a lily white girl like me was bound to raise eyebrows in Port Saint Clare, where civil rights laws were all well and good for city folks, but blacks dated blacks and whites dated whites and exceptions weren t tolerated You know that feeling when you started reading a book and you didn t expect anything so it surprised you big time Summer of the Oakmoon surprised me with its emotional depth From the first chapter, I was already A black guy going to dinner with a lily white girl like me was bound to raise eyebrows in Port Saint Clare, where civil rights laws anything so it surprised you big time Summer of the Oakmoon surprised me with its emotional depth From the first chapter, I was already invested in Tessa is a delightful heroine I thought that the book being set in 1982 would be a problem but instead, it made the bookreadable The time and setting of the book is perfect with the story and it was a big part of the plot it was believable and everything is perfectly in place Laura Templeton writes such authentic characters She made me fall hard with Tessa and Jacob in a heartbeat At first, Tessa is what you expected She s scared and confused Dating a black guy is not something you would normally do in their town Unless you want people raising their eyebrows when they see you or you want to be talked about in such a bad way But good thing Jacob is brave enough for both of them Racism was at large at their time and place I was hurting for Jacob But also admiring him The romance in this book belongs now in the list of my ALL TIME FAVORITES list ..he ever so gently tipped my face up to his Now, I m going to kiss you Then, I m going to tell you that I love you His voice dropped to a husky whisper And that s all that needs to be said I was in a emotional rollercoaster and its the first time I m not complaining These two went through A LOT and from the moment they saw each other, I m already rooting for them I will seriously fight for these amazing characters to be together Insta love was a no show so that makes me love this bookIts amazing how Templeton weaved a simple and beautiful love story that will leave a huge impact to your heart Laura Templeton grabbed my heart, squeezed and twisted it and then repaired it again This time, its filled with love and hope Tessa and Jacob s story is so far from easy You ll get painful family secrets along the way, disagreeable characters that gets in Jacob and Tessa s way but all of that will be worth it With a dash of magic and a lot of love, Summer of the Oakmoon is perfect for readers who is looking for a deep and hopeful novel Looks like I am going to be the black sheep on this one For the life of me, I can t see how this book has received so many four or five star ratings.First, let s talk about Tess At the beginning of the book, I thought she was going to be gusty and independent and take charge Maybe it was the fact that she carried a gun with her and her dad had actually taught her how to use it But when it came to actually using the gun to kill a snake that had just bitten her, she was embarrassingly off with Looks like I am going to be the black sheep on this one For the life of me, I can t see how this book has received so many four or five star ratings.First, let s talk about Tess At the beginning of the book, I thought she was going to be gusty and independent and take charge Maybe it was the fact that she carried a gun with her and her dad had actually taught her how to use it But when it came to actually using the gun to kill a snake that had just bitten her, she was embarrassingly off with her aim and of course, she needed Jacob to rescue her This is a common theme in the book She needs Jacob or other people to rescue her What kind of self defense did her dad teach her anyway Then she got attacked on about three different occasions by some racist jerk and Tess acted like an idiot about those attacks First of all, she NEVER told anyone about them and second of all, NONE of these attacks inspired her to actually carry her gun with her Seriously Some guy is after her, but she just leaves her method of defending herself at home It wasn t like she was good at defending herself with it anyway, so whatever But even her friend Karen saved her one time by using pepper spray Also, she cried ALL THE TIME Was she capable of any other expression besides tears God, I just wanted to scream at her to stop crying and do what she needed to do already She acted like a child She is eighteen years old and she expressed disgust at seeing a picture of her dad and mom from a long time ago Apparently, the sight of her dad looking at her mom like he loved her was enough to make her roll her eyes Then her dad is in the hospital and her mom is busy taking care of him and it s Tess s birthday She gets irritated that she only got 50 She thought it was impersonal and she mentioned that she forgave her for the lack of a personal gift Yeah, that was so generous of her God, I rolled my eyes so hard at her And of course, after Jacob saves her from the snake, she suddenly can t imagine a future without him Next, let s talk about Jacob He didn t really make me mad or make me roll my eyes or anything, really He was just bland I don t understand why he fell so hard with Tess She was a nothing character and it seemed like their entire relationship was based on the mystery of what happened to Jacob s father a predictable mystery at that and trying not to let Tess s family take Jacob s family land They didn t really talk about themselves that much It was all about their family So how could they love each other It s a mystery to me Like I said, the actual mystery was predictable and the romance felt forced and kind of blah I expectedfrom this book, but the characters and the plot and even the writing style left me cold Growing up in the South, I really understood this book on a personal level I remember being in high school and hearing people in town whispering about the white girl who had a black boyfriend I immediately recognized those stares and the awkward feeling of knowing people were talking about that couple as soon as Tessa and Jacob became a couple Laura Templeton captures this perfectly Tessa and Jacob go through so much in this story that you really start to wonder whether they will be able to Growing up in the South, I really understood this book on a personal level I remember being in high school and hearing people in town whispering about the white girl who had a black perfectly Tessa and Jacob go through so much in this story that you really start to wonder whether they will be able to survive or not And this book is so emotionally charged that you cheer for them through the entire book I could not put this book down because I had to know how things were going to end between Tessa and Jacob The emotional roller coaster ride to the end was so worth it This is an amazing story that makes you question whether love is really all you need and if true love can really endure all things You will not be disappointed by this book A moving coming of age story, this book addresses social issues from the old South in a poignant fashion It is the perfect blend of romance and mystery, flavored by a dash of the supernatural A wonderful debut YA novel from Laura
