Magnifico, by Victoria Miles, is a story depicting the events of a young girl named Mariangela Benetti Mariangela, though she had no intention to, had to learn how to play the accordion Learning about her past, and even a bit about what her future may look like, this eleven year old goes through an experience she describes as out of a movie With the help from her teacher Gioseff, the teasing from her sisters, and the pressure from her papa and nonna, Mariangela must learn how to play the ac Magnifico, by Victoria Miles, is a story depicting the events of a young girl named Mariangela Benetti Mariangela, though she had no intention to, had to learn how to play the accordion Learning about her past, and even a bit about what her future may look like, this eleven year old goes through an experience she describes as out of a movie With the help from her teacher Gioseff, the teasing from her sisters, and the pressure from her papa and nonna, Mariangela must learn how to play the accordion perfectly The Benetti family, originally from Italy, had to adjust to Canada and the English language Throughout the book you can see how hard it is to adjust to new culture, and stay true to your nationality Magnifico is not only a novel about a girl trying to make her family proud, but it teaches the reader life lessons that many can relate to When Mariangela was faced with the option of ending her accoridon lessons, she had to consider how her actions would affect others Also, when Mariangela was being bullied and teased her teacher Gioseff had to step in and help her This teaches us never to be scared to ask someone for help In the end, it will only benefit you Magnifico was no doubt one of my favourite reads this year Highly recommended A title I put off reading for many years as it has the typical Canadian book cover unappealing I suspected it would be good as it was nominated years before for the Red Cedar Book Award but that cover I finally put my issues aside when I ran out of reading material while camping over spring break I m so glad I did It was such a sweet story, lovely writing and realistic characters Set in Vancouver in the late 1930s, it evokes a nostalgia for the old ways when life was simpler for kids i A title I put off reading for many years as it has the typical Canadian book cover unappealing I suspected it would be good as it was nominated years before for the Red Cedar Book Award but that cover I finally put my issues aside when I ran out of reading material while camping over spring break I m so glad I did It was such a sweet story, lovely writing and realistic characters Set in Vancouver in the late 1930s, it evokes a nostalgia for the old ways when life was simpler for kids in many ways but still bound by parental pressures I really enjoyed the setting of this novel, 1930 s Vancouver The plot and the main character were interesting It was an okay read that I m sure myadvanced grade 3 and 4 students will enjoy. It was okay I felt it was kind of redundent and it wasnt magnificently written The story line was very simple It mentioned some things about the Italian culture but a lot of it was inaccurate It was all right but it was amazing.
