recipes that are easy to prepare More on those in a minute. The background of the author was interesting Stoltzfus was raised on a Mennonite dairy farm Her family enjoyed fresh home grown ingredients for the dishes her mother prepared Stoltzfus went on to start her own deli and catering service using recipes she learned growing up.Nestled among thethan 200 recipes are charming stories from the author s Mennonite upbringing She also includes tips and tricks for making meal planning easier, along with ideas that will add flair when serving Almost every recipe comes with a bit of history how the dish came into her family or how the dish can or did relate to an inspiring experience. The recipes are divided into chapters including Appetizers, Dips, and Beverages Breakfast and Breads Spring Salads and Dressings Summer Sandwiches and Winter Soups Garden Fresh Veggies, Comfort Food, and Sides Main Entrees Desserts Cookies, Cakes, and Bars and Simple Do It Yourself Recipes Among one of the simple dishes I discovered a unique way to make the ever popular comfort food, Mac and Cheese While my version usually comes from a box, I decided to be a bit different and give Creamy Baked Macaroni and Cheese a try It s a yummy change from the box and is a new favorite at our house It s quick and easy to prepare But if you re pressed for time after a long day at work, there s also a version that can be prepared in a slow cooker so it s waiting on you when you get home Here s the oven version I tried 3 Tbsp salted butter2 cups macaroni, uncooked1 tsp salt tsp pepper cup American cheese, diced1 cup Monterey Jack or cheddar cheese, shredded1 egg, slightly beaten4 cups milkPreheat oven to 325 F Melt butter and pour over macaroni in baking dish, tossing to coat Add salt, pepper, cheese, and egg Stir in milk Bake uncovered for 90 minutes Do not stir while baking This comes out of the oven golden brown and creamy Serves 4 5.I used cup American cheese and cheddar instead of Monterey Jack It was delicious with a crispy brown topping The slow cooker version is a bit different and takes about 4 hours to cook However, it would be a welcome sight waiting for you to enjoy after a long day at work or shopping. In her introduction, Stoltzfus talks about how she came to realize food has a way of bringing people together That caused me to reflect on how food is a staple part of our lives, especially in the South Aside from the fact we need food to live, we also use food to celebrate happy occasions, share food when a loved one is sick or passes away, enjoy a friend s company or renew a friendship over food, and begin new relationships while sharing a meal some even end relationships this way.A FARMER S DAUGHTER RECIPES FROM A MENNONITE KITCHEN is a charming and useful cookbook that will become a favorite among your collection It will also make a delightful gift to novice and expert cooks alike This cookbook contains no photographs to tempt you with, but the contentthan makes up for the lack of artwork.Author Dawn Stoltzfus website is October 2012 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.FTC Full Disclosure I requested this book and it was why it was and is a family favorite. The recipes that I have tried have been easy and straightforward I love the Herb Focaccia Bread, but the recipe that I am sharing in this review is found on page 53 the French Puff Cinnamon Muffins Dawn s description is as follows These melt in your mouth They re like donuts without being fried And so simple to make Yeah Indeed these bite size muffins are easy to make, and when I offered them to my family the first comment made was This are kind of like donuts What are they So my taste testers agreed that the donut description was accurate. Now on to the most important part the recipe.Ingredients are as follows Muffin batter1 2 cup white or raw sugar1 4 cup salted butter, softened1 4 tsp cinnamon1 2 cup milk1 tsp baking powder1 cup flourCinnamon mixture1 4 cup salted butter1 2 cup white or raw sugar1 tsp cinnamonPreheat oven to 375 F Grease 24 mini muffin cups Mix sugar, butter, and cinnamon in a bowl Stir in milk, and then mix in baking powder and flour until combined Do not overmix Fill prepared mini muffin cups about half full and bake until lightly golden, 15 20 minutes. While muffins are baking, prepare the cinnamon mixture by melting butter In a separate bowl, mix together sugar and cinnamon When muffins are done, let cool slightly and remove from their cups, then dip each muffin completely in melted butter and roll in sugar cinnamon mixture Yields 18 20 mini muffins.Serve warm When I used this recipe I actually made 24 mini muffins, rather than the 18 20.In the Simple Do it yourself Recipes there are recipes to create your own mixes for pancakes, vanilla pudding, taco seasoning, Christmas potpourri, and laundry soap This is an interesting, tasty, and enjoyable book Perfect for anyone looking for simple yet delicious restaurant in Washington DC, named The Farmer s Wife, after her own mother The recipes that are in this book come from her childhood as well as the restaurant.Seasoned with stories associated with the recipes and helpful hints, this cookbook would be a lovely addition to any kitchen Hearty, fulfilling foods to serve your family in love I have heard so many people talking about these Pumpkin Lattes so I thought I would try out the recipe in the Farmer s Daughter cookbook on page 24 The lattes looked wonderful, easy to make, and so much cheaper than I hear people spending on one from a coffee shop I have decided that I am not one who enjoys drinking pumpkin flavored drinks It was nothing to do with this recipe, it just seemed to me that pumpkin has no place in coffee But I love pumpkin so what next. I decided to try the recipe for Pumpkin Bars with Cinnamon Cream I am in a pumpkin mood with all of this nice cool weather These bars were so tasty A great fit for the pumpkin I loaded up on at the grocery last week in case we have a shortage in pumpkin of course. The only ingrediend besides pumpkin I don t typically have on hand is cream cheese so once I picked that up it was basic ingredients from there It is made on a Jelly Roll pan and smothered with cream cheese frosting, what isn t to love Like Dawn mentions in her book, it is such a blessing to bring happiness to your family through good foods Now since I live in a Mennonite Community I must add that a lot of these recipes seemed to be scaled down for your typical American family in size Of the friends I know, they would have to at least double most of them as I do for my larger family So don t think you are getting recipes that will feed droves, they are scaled down This cookbook will help you try out some of those nice, home cooked recipes with the basic ingredients you have on hand I was happy to review A Farmer s Daughter Recipes from a Mennonite Kitchen I can t say I really enjoy cooking, but with a family of five I do quite a bit of it It s always fun to try new recipes, and I always think of Amish Mennonite cooking as being a delicious treat.Dawn Stoltzfus is the daughter of a farmer I assume you figured that however Or perhaps I should say all sound good, since the book does not have photos It seems strange to me to put out a cookbook without pictures, but I suppose in this day of shrinking budgets, that was perhaps a necessity.Dawn includes commentary with each recipe, and these are fun to read tidbits about Mennonite life, or how she tweaks a recipe, or other things that help you feel you re having a conversation with her She comes across as down to earth and friendly I had a small issue with the way each of these little blurbs was captioned with And another thing And another thing This struck me as pretty annoying after a while, but maybe that s just me.In addition to the typical desserts, entrees, and appetizers, the book has a section with simple DIY recipes, which I think may end up being my favorite part of the book recipes for taco seasoning, cream soups, pancake mix, chocolate syrup I m anxious to try some of these This week, I made the Ginger Honey Salmon page 153 I d say it was average, but honestly how much can one say about fish that was simply marinated in sauce I also made Layered Meatless Mexican Casserole page 157 I feared its potential as one of those recipes that is too healthy to taste good it contains rice, salsa, corn, onion, refried beans, spinach I even threw in an eggplant but it was delicious I think that this book would make a fun Christmas gift for someone who enjoys cooking or someone who, like me, is forced into it.Thanks to Revell for a review copy A Farmer s Daughter is available October 2012 My Thoughts On This Book This cookbook is written this review are my own ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dawn Stoltzfus is a wife, a mother of two sweet little boys, and a lover of anything creative She started and ran The Farmer s Wife Market until 2008 when she sold it in order to stay at home to raise her family She loves to cook, for one or three hundred, and sees cooking and entertaining as an opportunity to be Jesus to people and serve them out of love and joy rather than out of a sense of obligation Her love for cooking was inspired by her mother and developed as she cooked for her family of six on their active, working dairy farm in Ohio Although I am not a huge fan of cooking, I love getting new cookbooks I like to be able to try new meals in order to make sure that my family doesn t get in a rut, especially at dinnertime I was drawn to this exactly what I found in this cookbook.I marked many, many recipes in this book to try I always go through the meal part of the book marking recipes, and my husbad goes through the desserts Since receiving this book, we have tried three of the recipes two dinnertime meals and one dessert Our favorite recipe by far of the ones we tried was the Simple Chicken Cordon Bleu It was so easy to prepare, and I didn t have to make a special trip to the store to make it This dish was basic but with a little added flair to make it a bitspecial My husband really liked it.The other meal recipe we tried was the Slow Cooker Lasagna, and it was good, too I think I would leave out the extra salt next time The dessert we tried was the Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Oatmeal Bars They were really good right from the oven, but by the next day, they had gotten a bit hard and crumbly, making them difficult to eat This is a nice cookbook that has some satisfying recipes, and we look forward to trying evenof them.I am allowed to include one recipe from the book in my post, so I will choose the Simple Chicken Cordon Bleu To see the recipe, see my complete review here Title A FARMER S DAUGHTER
