Here is a quote A Missionary on Higher Criticism There is much talk these daysabout suiting the preaching and teaching of God s Word to the present time, present demands, modern thought and science, etc., and it makes one tremble with apprehension, for when man begins to improve on God s ways, there is a crash coming as sure as the next winter is coming and surer If there was a time to be anchored in God s Word, it is now Sophie Graham, Missionary to China 1889 1940 Five stars because these are stories that I need to hear, stories of real people who live not for themselves but who give themselves entirely to serving Jesus and others It can happen here or abroad, but it s a mindset we seldom here about today in this country of dangerous comfort. A true to life story of Jimmy and Sophie Graham, pioneering missionaries in China Lots of great spiritual material and stories. Stephen Fortosis has written a lovely book about Jimmy and Sophie Graham, Missionaries to China, background material for which has come from letters and other archive material Coming from a country, Ireland, that has sent its people to the four corners of the world and from a family that even sent one to Africa one can only marvel at the indomitable spirit of love and generosity that provokes such a move In a world today that is so materialistic and selfish, the work of missionaries can se Stephen Fortosis has written a lovely book about Jimmy and Sophie Graham, Missionaries to China, background material for which has come from letters and other archive material Coming from a country, Ireland, that has sent its people to the four corners of the world and from a family that even sent one to Africa one can only marvel at the indomitable spirit of love and generosity that provokes such a move In a world today that is so materialistic and selfish, the work of missionaries can seem almost like an insanity of sorts The Grahams went into a lawless, violent environment that even the elements seemed determined to disrupt and the goodness of their actions should act as a model for this confused time in our history If you want to achieve something in this life, help those who need help, love those who are suffering, feed the hungry, heal the sick It s what they did.The influence of formalised religion within the missionary context is something that makes me uncomfortable In doing what the Grahams did, their very life was a prayer and beyond reproach I would favour aecumenical viewpoint with less separateness between those who worship the same God It s the cause of wars, the turning of people against people, as in Ulster I also believe that interpreting God s mind and actions is a somewhat illogical exercise at times.Still, this is an excellent book and well worth reading It s an education in itself An amazing story of Christian faith
