A very quick overview between Confucius and Lao Tzu but also a brief history of China during those years Borrowed from India, concepts got mixed and expanded The beatings in order to get the logic of religion is a practice that probably was used during the cultural revolution but the way that Chinese respect their elderly and morality is very close to the Greek Orthodox as well. A high level overview that I would highly recommend for people newly interested in some of the major tenets of Eastern philosophy For those who have been around the block, this book is still a decent simplification of certain contrasting elements in Confucianism and Taoism I certainly didn t feel dumber after reading it. I will need to learnNice small taste. Reasonable refresher on stuff I explored some 15 years ago. Pros A very compact introduction to large topic Very good explanations, easy to understand Well researched Introduces all of the giants in the Chinese philosophical tradition Gives an historic perspective of how these people s teachings have developed over time.Cons Extremely bad pronunciation of Chinese names and words, I had to google a few times to figure out whom the author was talking about Slight overweight towards Taoism, I feel something is missing in the Confucian area. This lecture series just wets your appetite for Eastern Philosophy and is by no means complete It is nevertheless still very good, informative and worth while Don t be disappointed if all your questions are not addressed as there is only so much you can expect form lectures I highly recommend it for those who want to understand Eastern thinking better with the understanding that it isor less just an introduction to the subject rather than a complete guide. It is a great synthesis of Chinese philosophy since its origins Of course you won t find deep analysis nor extensive discussion But if you re looking for a vey good way of understanding and introducing yourself to this discipline this is a great book to start with. Not very thorough It was good to pass the time while biking Considering I knew nothing about Taoism before this, so I found some parts quite interesting It jumps very abruptly from the second to the nineteenth century. A good introduction to Chinese philosophy and religion i listened it as audio book this is a good philoshopy book
