While reading many things about The Ingredients of Love made me feel that it's a book that was written to sell rather than to tell a storyDo you know the cute little French love comedy Amelie? The Ingredients of Love feel like the wannabe seuel Aurelie but unfortunately with drama and clichés and much less charm and depthThe Ingredients of Love is a very typical and unmemorable feel good romance The story idea about a fake author is actually funny enough and as it turns out uite realistic as well since Nicolas Barreau himself seems to be a fake but the characters are just too flat and one dimensional they most definitely do not leap off the pages and are also very unlikable Heroine Aurelie is a restaurant owner in her 30s but she behaves like a very immature 20 year old at best She's like a teenie fangirl trying to meet Justin Bieber because he sang a song about her restaurant and to get what she wants she will basically harass the publisher Her love interest Andre is much less annoying but also much clichéd When he first talks to Aurelie on the phone he finds her annoying which she is but once he sees her in person he realizes that she's a pretty girl and so he starts trying to get in her pants Oh sorry I was going to say he realizes that she is the one and only the love of his life and that's why he tries to get in her pants It's the kind of predestined love at first sight many women seem to like to dream and read about and Andre's unrealistic character is complete wishfulfillment He saw Aurelie once thought she was attractive and then wants to marry her and spent the rest of his life with her To me it was ridiculous how he starts planning a family with a woman because she has a pretty smile without knowing her without even liking her while talking on the phone so yes this is the kind of story The Ingredients of Love is and it will appeal to a very particular readershipThe plot itself is also completely predictable no funny or surprising twists and turns and even worse no slightly profound emotions Things also get uite cheesy and overall this book simply felt like a big combo of clichés As said the light hearted love story set in Paris reminded me a lot of the movie Amelie and given that the publisher uses these similarities to promote this book which by the way is not written by a French author and the heroines have so similar names Amelie Poulain and Aurelie Bredin it's hard for me to believe in a coincidence All these things made me feel that this book is uite a calculated creation Written and published to become a bestseller and not because it tells a beautiful interesting story In the end I can't really recommend The Ingredients of Love to anybody apart from those who are really looking for an extremely light romance story don't mind it being cheesy and clichéd and have already seen the movie Amelie because else Amelie is definitely the better choice COME ON LET'S ALL CELEBRATE THE FACT I FINALLY FINISHED MY FIRST BOOK IN HUNGARIAN AGHHI am uarter Hungarian so I grew up speaking the language with my Grandmother but never reading or writingI feel so accomplished right now and I've fallen in love with the Hungarian language even My reading experience was uite similar to when I read my first French book I didn't understand every single word but that didn't hinder me in actually understanding what was going on etcThis book is a great cozy up in autumn book so cute it's painful ugh but in my opinion it tries a bit too hard to evoke the French feeling that films like The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain portray really beautifullyIt actually does manage to show Paris in a lovely way thoughThe love interests both didn't concinve me sorryyyAndré Chabanais was so desperate and kind of slimy and I felt repelled by himAurélie didn't really do anything wrong but she managed to annoy me anywaysAll in all the events were all to convenient everything fell into place just so; and while this was good for me reading wise hence first Hungarian book I think if I'd read this in German or English I'd be like whatever throughout perhaps 90 percent of thisGosh I am so snarky right now but ya know what I meanStill gonna be a book I'll remember solely for the fact that I read it in HungariaaaanYeah we all know now right A Parisian version of 'You've Got Mail' very sweet and warm My favorite part was when André's mother fell down the escalator at Galeries Lafayette Damn you Nicolas Barreau now I want to visit Paris like crazy It is a beautiful story of two seemingly ordinary people that fall in love in the most peculiar way possible I guess literature can bring people together after all and that is fine by me The author is clever well read humorous and has a way with words And plus he seems to be self sarcastic about his own work something that he projects through his novel a fact that I really liked It was refreshing A book about how someone writes a book that is about the story of the real book And it has meta parallels to the real book What? oOYou have to read it yourself ; The protagonist of this book is a French man who wrote a novel about an English man working in Paris called Das Lächeln der Frauen first parallel But he wrote it under the secret pseudonym of an English author and even a pseudo translator because it is obviously written in French Now a girl the second protagonist tries to get in contact with this Pseudonym What I found really compelling about this book are the parallels to this real book itself As a Good Reads librarian I had made some research before so I could edit the data of this book Well did you ever tried to find the original French version of this book? Or did you ever tried to find some deeper information about Nicolas Barreau and this ominous translator Sophie Scherrer? I was just grinning my a off when I readlistened to the part of the book where the girl tries to find the original title of the book in the book and was as confused as I was with the real one Maybe Nicolas Burreau is not what he seems to be maybe even the translator ; don't uite understand the hype around this one predictable plot and the love story didn't get to me either might try to cook the lamb ragout recipe though Sometimes one should not read a review about a book before you start Since if it is a negative one it will influence you whilst reading Rather make up your own mind So needless to say i went in with a negative attitude I found that the author uses alot of French words and phrases which if you have no french you are screwed I always know that if a book takes me over a week to read I was not THAT into itcute little story but no WOW romantic read This was a cute story about how a book brought two people together It was ok not bad but not great either 15 stars? Idk 🤣🙄
